With subsidized palm oil being burnt (at lower than production cost) in those fat SUVs and Pickups of the richer folks - The masses now have a total lack of palm oil for cooking purposes in the stores.

To the "Smarties" of the Government this figure appears fine, when the poorest Thais are neglected their staple foods. Millions of liters of imported food grade palm oil, from the smarter Malaysians now are already on their way to the fuel pumps. All stores have large shelf areas sitting completely empty.

Poor folks can't afford olive oil or sesame oil at a ten-fold selling price! :diablo:

I am totally dumbfounded that this shortage has gone on for so long when there is a cheap supply just across the border in Malaysia. Actually shortage is the wrong word, there is none.
Why has the government delayed so long ?

They are dicking around with eggs being sold by kilo or unit whilst there is no oil to make a fried egg.
Bacon and boiled eggs ain't on my morning menu

I recall viewing a documentary some time back regarding the growing economic trend {and the comeback} of palm oil being promoted as the universal saviour for "bio-fuels". Though, this film concentrated it's studies on Indonesia, it reveled in the idea of a broader SE Asian future where oil palms grow in profusion. As it takes years for a oil palm to mature to the point of extraction, they should plan accordingly.

Even if it was affordable....Thais {Asians} don't use your beloved olive oil. Not their thing.
