Just curious, my wife has a restaurant which I go buy the food from the markets and deliver it to the restaurant. I guess some may say this is working. I don;t have a work permit for this so if I did get caught one day what would the penalty be?
Would I see jail time if I didn't donate enough to the immigration officers trust fund?

That is considered working and the penalty for working in Thailand without a work permit can be from 3 months to 5 years jail. You will also face deportation and be blacklisted from Thailand for 99 years.

They nailed a husband of a restaurant owner recently in Chiang Mai for issuing a single receipt, the requesting "customer" was a police volunteer and snitch, another farang from somewhere, that turned him in and testified against him in court.
Be careful with snitches and their tricks!

Just about all the cases I heard of in Phuket, the person was deported. Work permit violations are the responsibility of the Dept of Labour, not immigration, so it is dealt with by the normal police. Of course paying the right 'fine' will get you out.
Going shopping for a restaurant, don't worry about it just about everyone does it without any problems.

@ trangman
Isn't it a bit a "walk on very thin ice" to tell a fellow farang not to worry, when on the other hand that very same activity may get him deported or make him subject to massive extortion?
The laws are very tough and any manual labor for a business, even if it is your wife's, will be considered work. All it takes for someone, that is jealous of Spade's money, wife or possessions, is a proof in terms of a stupid photo with a cellphone with him wielding supplies or merchandise at the site and he's in for a Thai treatment of the laws
And sorry, but Phuket ain't a measure for ordinary Thailand, with the highest percentage of illegal workers, illegal businesses, illegal buildings and such on record. They also are known as the greediest folks, when it comes to screw a farang
I strongly recommend to Spade to hire a helping hand to execute the manual labor involved in his supply routine - or obtain proper documents

I know many that have no work permits especially teachers and they only pay a small fine when they get caught.
If the police does not like you or not corrupt then your in trouble.

This would appear to be the latest case of a foreigner being arrested for working without a work permit:
Gunnar Nordal, 50, was taken into custody by a team of Chonburi Immigration officers April 1 as he stood at the door of his Kiss a-Go-Go. Police confiscated a business card with his name on it and other evidence purporting to show he actively managed operations of the bar.
