Lonely Planet publishing group send a mailer to it's contributors:

10 countries that can still be travelled on the cheap
The era of travelling the world for pennies a day is over, right? Wrong. There’s plenty of adventure out there, no matter what your bank balance is telling you. Escape the global recession and build up a wealth of experiences in these ten places.
Travel to the lands of 'no budget, no problem'

Thailand, the long time darling of LP is not even amongst the Top 10 anymore:

To be fair, Thailand is not the 3rd world country it used to be.
Look at some of the countries on that list.
India, Iran, Indonesia and Sudan :sarcastic:

No surprise.
Did you really think Thailand was going to stay cheap with the developments in the last 15 years?

Thailand will only get more and more expensive as the years go on and I don't mean prices rising with inflation.
Phuket has huge potential, if they did not continue to keep shooting themselves in the foot over the last decade, it would be much more expensive than now.

If Thailand one day let foreigners own land here, watch for Phuket to skyrocket.
