I have seen on TV that the reds donated blood to pour on some government houses.
This seems insane to me, the red shirts are making themselves look like a bunch of psychos.

Was this Thaksins plan? Also why was pouring blood even thought about?

They are thinking with their hearts.
It shows up the east-west divide in the way we all think.

Does anyone know what the western press is making of this?

I bet the western press is calling them barbarians.
The blood could of been put to good use, couldn't they just use red paid?
Are they going to rally again on Saturday? I have plans tomorrow :chok_mini:

Frankly, any punditry by the Western press has little or nothing to do with anything. Better chance that one will find the expected write-ups....

Naturally. Consider the source.

I am not really into politics, but this red shirts business has been interesting.
Was at a friends bbq last week, there was some red shirt guys outside the gate, had a few beers with them and they told us they were only out to have some fun.

A lazy tuk tuk driver sent me walking straight into the centre of one of these protests on my down to khao san road (which i found to be a total waste of time but it was my first time in Thailand so i thought i'd check the place out) he pulled up about a mile away and directed me into the heart of the protest. I'm not sure whether he was having a laugh at my expense or just a moron. The red shirts seemed to treat me with either shock or amusement as i strolled through with my shopping bags... I'd have been angry but i was too busy dodging street vendors. They must make a killing from the protests! Never again will i follow the directions of a tuk tuk man!

Anyway, i've digressed...

After chatting to an ex-pat in a bar around the corner from khao san, he informed me that the act of throwing the blood onto the building comes from an Old Khmer Curse, which obviously speaks for itself in terms of taking action against the government but apparently could also be a tribute to the fact that Thaksin is supposedly in hiding in Cambodia?

Purely speculation obviously but he might have had a point somewhere amongst all the guess work

Most tuk tuk drivers around tourist spots are morons.
If pouring blood on a building suppose to be a curse, wouldn't them stepping on the blood curse them too?
The blood was all over the ground as a lot was spilled and washed onto the pavements where many of the red shirts were standing.

Well no because the blood is just a part of the ritual, it was the brahmin priest kneeled in the blood, bowing and casting the curse that fulfills the whole process.

Like i said, i'm far from knowledgeable on this subject and i'm just repeating what i've read, seen or heard.

The thaksin part was just speculation.

there's some interesting points in this article but it's quite biased so take it with a pinch of salt.

As some might envision, it will never cease until 'that' event.

To be honest the disruption caused is minimal and the protest is entirely peaceful, the few little acts of violence haven't really been targetted at anybody in particular and i think they're more aiming at shock value with those. You should be fine. The only thing is, you might have to pay a few baht more in a taxi as they have to take the long way round to certain areas as certain roads are closed off but it shouldn't get in the way of anything you're likely to want to do. It certainly didn't make a difference to me the 4 days i was in bangkok at the end of last week.
