Phuket before become a popular destination:
- Beaches were crystal clear with white sand.
- Friendly local who live simple life doing fishery.
Phuket now:
- Beaches are crowded (with no lifeguards!).
- More rubbish.
- More red light biz; pubs, bars, prostitutes, ladyboys etc.
- More expensive charged; taxi, tuk-tuk, song-taew, massage etc.
- More ripping off; souvenir shops, shops along Patong beach, taxi (again) etc.
- Local people are mainly dependent on tourism business.
Pattaya before:
- Beaches were crowded (with no lifeguards too).
- More rubbish.
- More red light biz; pubs, bars, prostitutes, ladyboys etc.
- More expensive charged; taxi, tuk-tuk, song-taew, massage etc.
- More ripping off; souvenir shops etc.
Pattaya now:
- Full of Russians
- Less crowd (tourist go somewhere else such as Phuket).
- Quieter red light biz (but still have mafia involved).
- Less prostitutes and ladyboys (they move to work in Phuket).

Most of the islands on the Andaman side near the Malaysian border are still quite pristine and untouched........WHOOPS! Never mind, don't go there.
Cross the border, if you not want to pay though the nose for Thai boat mafia or Koh Lipe's food prices

Absolutely on the mark! Phuk@ just charges 100% to 500% more for most services and food plus transport and accommodations are worth a few extra dineros too! Exchange rates have a Phuk@ bonus, banking charges are steeper and the lack of competition leaves Phuket amongst the highest priced places for medical services, car services or shopping grounds for electronics or camera equipment
Any Andaman beach outscores Pattaya Beach 10:1, except for Khao Lak (the beach in Khao Lak town itself!) and parts of Patong

Last time I swam in Pattaya, it felt like I was swimming in garbage, the condom that floated past me did it for me, never swim in Pattaya again, unless it is a hotel swimming pool.
I have not been to all of Phukets beaches, but Karon and Kata beach was nice.
