I know girls who hate the red light part of Thailand, as I am sure they get asked by many farangs about a price for the night. It must be tough for a Thai girl to travel abroad because of the typical stereotype. What do you think?

Brothel-towns worldwide have a hard time these days to change their public image. Prostitution ain't taxable income, so it is outlawed in Thailand. TAT spends Gazillions to make tourists believe Pattaya is a family-friendly resorttown Posted Image

Socially, red-light work is considered a job for underdogs of society.

I have to wonder if 'the world' is akin or even knowledgeable regarding said stereotypes, stigmas, and myths.

Better chance, Tom, that most everyday Thai ladies aren't conscious about such things because they don't travel such circles. These thoughts might be more reflective of your circles and pre-disposed mentality.....it is really a smaller clique that displays such subliminal manner.

Glorified by some, the brothels gained fame as a supplier for the human resources part of "catalogue-wifeys", their drug use and gambling habits plus their lower class (= lack of education) upbringing, hence limited treasure of words and social skills traveled with them overseas.

The media plays a major role, and media for the lower end of the social ladders do report about brothels with minors, kids for sale, freak shows and such frequently in Europe.

Today's Western embassies impose restriction after restriction to stop or dam that one-way flow of brides. Posted Image

Unfortunately, these restrictions on travel bring side effects to all Thai females, even those ones, with a brain and a degree - if they desire to visit other developed parts of the world.

Thai women don't like the red-light districts but that goes for all women across the world.
Thai men really don't give a flying fck as they'll go get it if they want to and that's that :)

Thai men will make use of prostitutes but they do it discretely.
Farangs will walk around the street with them.
Many thais are astounded that an educated, well paid man would want to be seen in public like this.

Different moral conceptions. Self-respect comes to mind....

Exactly.
A lot of farangs wander around with a working girl 20+ years younger than themselves and think they look good.
They just don't realise how stupid they look.

Dudes, which couldn't find a decent mate for years back home, feel they're in heaven in Asia, when some material chick sells her butt or else to him for a fee. Some even consider brothels a nice place to date and pay sin soot shortly after :sarcastic:

You take a girl out for dinner and the movies and sometimes still don't get ant. Paying for it skips all that and it's a sure thing. Unless you have too much to drink :)

Thailand has acquired a worldwide reputation and I am afraid that all thai women are getting tarred by the same brush.

The retiree that spoke to you must be some kind of insensitive idiot but there are plenty who think that way.

There's a Thai proverb say; "Only one rotten fish stunk the whole basket". That's the thing happening to Thai girls.

Even when 97% of Thai women fall into the category of 'good girls'. The stigmas, myths, and stereotype perpetuated themselves.
