Do you think one day that working visa's and all the other visa's will be easier to obtain and the border runs be not needed? I seriously see no purpose in doing border runs. Do you think Thai immigration will ever relax the visa's in this country?

I think they will only relax the regulations if forced to.
Money would be the best stimulus to get a change but expats just don't put enough money into the economy to make them try to increase it.

Living long term in Malaysia or Laos is a lot less paperwork.

Looks like it might be getting harder.
Just read elsewhere that they want to reduce the number of work permits issued in 2010.
Their target is a reduction of 20%.
Sorry no link but from a normally reliable source.

20% they rather gain in areas that they don't wanna talk about :wacko3:

work permits equal cash flow in the coffers - so they amputate just another tentacle :blum1:

If you look on the other side of the coin, It can be almost impossible for Thai's to get a visa to many other countries if they do not have a degree.
I do not agree with Thai immigration, I heard also that the work permits will go up 5 times this year. But I heard this in a bar, so who knows how reliable that it.

Can't realistically see that Thai resident/long-term/non-imm will change much at all within the next generation. Your typical straight forward tourist and short-timer visa could easily modify themselves many times - that's their target.

Well countries usually relax there immigration laws if they need skilled workers or jobs that can not be filled, Thailand does not have that problem at all. Maybe when Thailand develops into a much richer country. The border runs and the rest is a pain in the you know where, but that's life

Just keep Thailand the way it is. Thailand would not be Thailand if it was not for all the craziness that happens here. As soon as foreigners are allowed to buy land outright, that is when Thailand will be totally ruined.

I agree with Skippy too, foeigners would completely buy out the southern part of Thailand and all the coastal areas. Well maybe not all.

Thailands reason for being the land we know and love is laissez-faire nationalism.
For what it is I think it's a very good combination.

I live here no problem and know of few other countries like Thailand. Yes PI is good, Malaysia is easy for visa, Cambodia. But for the combination of things you get here in LOS it's not a bad groove when all's said and done :)

Hello, after some questions here in Perth about why I need a 90 visa, I got one but was quizzed in Phuket on arrival December 5 2009 in transit to Bangkok.
Then upon arrival at the immigration passport control in Chiang Mai February 26 2010 the guy started asking me questions in Thai, luckily I have had a tutor while in Chiang Mai and while not fluent I did understand enough to answer his questions with a mix of Thai and English, he said I passed the test and what test??
He said that the Thai government are starting to look at the Farang who will stay 90 days and also have the one year student Visa and check wether they can actually speak some Thai.

Failure to speak some Thai will go against any further visa applications for long stays.
I had hear many rumours about the crack down on the 1 year student visa's. When i was at the Airport Central Plaza and got into the lift and the guy next to me wore an immigration jacket and so asked him what the deal was, he smiled in the Thai way and was non committed but we chatted a bit and my tutor would have been so proud of me.

There are many farang rumours going around these days.

It is because a lot of student visa's are abused here, most schools will offer student visa's to people willing to pay the money, but they do not care if you attend or not.
It is the visa most people get if they can no obtain a working visa or other 1 year visa's.
My friend is currently on it and he also gets questioned from time to time when he does a border run.
