I agree ! Metro and skytrain are the best options to travel easily, fast and cheap in Bangkok.

Yes I think staying around Nana is the most convenient place in Bangkok, it just has a bit of a seedy nightlife though. If you have family, better to stay away from Hotels on Soi 4, Soi 7 and Soi 3. The other soi's are not so bad.
