The Thai dowry system is known as the 'Sin Sot'. Traditionally, the groom will be expected to pay a sum of money to the family, to compensate them and to demonstrate that the groom is financially capable of taking care of their daughter. Sometimes, this sum is purely symbolic, and will be returned to the bride and groom after the wedding has taken place.
Sin Sot is common in both Thai-Thai and Thai-foreign marriages. The bride price may range from nothing, if the woman is divorced, has a child fathered by another man, or is widely known to have had premarital relations with many men; to ten million Thai Baht (approx US$330,000) or more for a woman of high social standing, a beauty queen, or a highly educated woman. The sin sot in Thailand is paid at the engagement ceremony, and consists of three elements: cash, Thai (96.5% pure) gold, and the more recent Western tradition of a diamond ring. The most commonly stated rationale for the sin sot in Thailand is that it allows the groom to demonstrate that he has enough financial resources to support the bride (and possibly her family) after the wedding. In many cases, especially when the amount is large, the parents of a Thai bride will return all or part of the sin sot to the couple in the form of a wedding gift following the engagement ceremony. This is the basic rule of sin sot and can vary from one family to another.
Becareful if you are marrying a girl from the bar, I don't mean to generalise but many guys pay way too much sin sot for a girl with no education and sleeps around. Sin sot traditionally is zero for these type of girls, but they at times ask for a huge sum of money and never return a penny.
If you have anything else to add, please do so. Be sensible as I will remove any silly comments.
