Taxi's in Thailand
Taxi's in Thailand come in various ways, there is the motorbike taxi, tuk tuk and a metered taxi. Prices are much cheaper then in many western countires and is a great way to get around. Also when waving a taxi over, please try and do it with your fingers pointing down
Motbike Taxi's
Are common forms for public transport in Bangkok and most other cities, towns and villages in Thailand. They are generally used for short trips. In Bangkok, there are motorcycle taxi queues on many sois, and the queues are regulated by the city's government. Licensed motorcycle-taxi operators wear orange vests. In compliance with Thailand's helmet law, many (but not all) carry a spare helmet to offer to passengers.
They are a very cheap and will not cost you more then 30 baht. You will need to be aware about how they ride these things, it is a good idea to keep your legs tucked in as much as possible, because they go in between cars at the lights and seem to go through tight spaces you think is not possible to fit
Tuk Tuks
Are a three wheel opened air taxi in Thailand, which are not metered and you will need to negotiate on the fare. Prices will be cheaper then a taxi, but they will sometimes want to take you to a shop, claiming that it is very cheap etc. The Tuk tuk driver does this as he gets commision on what you buy there. So be clear on where you want to go.
While Tuk tuk's can be a lot of fun, I would recommend short distance trips because you don't want to be breathing in all the fumes for too long, especially in Bangkok.
But I do recommend you to give a tuk tuk a try at least once. They are fun and scarey at the same time and since your on holidays. It is a must..
Metered Taxi
The metered Taxi is probably the best way to get around Thailand, they all have airconditions and most of the cars are Toyota Corolla's.
You will see them in all sorts of different colours, to the plain green and yellow, to fluro pink, blue and green. So finding a taxi will not be hard as they stick out.
Before you get in the taxi, ask the driver for the meter, as some taxi drivers will try and negotiate a price with you, it is usally double or triple of what your trip normally costs. If you go on the toll way, it is normal that the passenger has to pay the toll. The price per km is about 5 or 6 baht/km. You can call a taxi too to come pick you up but you will be charged 20 baht that will be on top of your fare. Ph: 1681 or 02-319 9911
